Crafts: Restoring A Child's Fire Engine

Thank you!
With our oldest grandchild having just turned 4, we have gradually been bringing down stored "treasures" from the attic.  Boxes and boxes of Fisher Price and Playskool toys which we packed up when our youngest, now 33, no longer played with them.  Some date back to our oldest, now 39 and all the toys have held up reasonably well considering.  Our three grandchildren love to play with them on their visits.

One such toy was this red fire engine which was a gift to our son when he was three.  He is now 36 and the grandchildren are his children.  The fire engine sustained some damage over the years but the pedals still worked and the kids enjoyed riding it.
I recently decided to give it a facelift and as you can see, a can of red spray paint worked wonders.  I also had some silver spray paint left over from another project and it brought the original shine back to the bell and the ladder bars.  Some of the stickers remained and were able to be peeled off before painting and reapplied afterwards.
There is still plenty of life left in this 33 year old toy!

My MIL did this for her only grandchild and I think we adults had as much fun as the child did exploring the 3 adult children's favorite toys. Nobody could believe the treasures she had to play with that are now collector's items.

Great job restoring the fire engine!

Wow it looks brand new! What a fantastic job you did restoring that toy. I'm sad I didn't keep any of my fun play things from my childhood because I know my girls would love playing with them now. Or, at least the 4-yr-old since the baby's still too young, but our toys were such higher quality than the ones made today. The Easy Bake Oven was like a real microwave and those toy eggs that turned into yolk that we'd use to recreate the drug commercial...such good memories. Back to the fire engine, I'm especially fond of it since my husband, dad, and 2 brothers are all volunteer firefighters. Nicely done!

Beautifully done! I had some toys of mine- Little People- that my mom saved for my boys. I sadly just had to throw them out since the plastic had gotten too brittle and was breaking off in sharp pieces so it wasn't safe :( I loved seeing how you were able to save this treasure and have it look brand new!

Aw, this was a really good post. Spending some time and actual effort to create a top notch
article… but what can I say… I put things off a whole lot and don't seem to get anything done.
